What is Long COVID?
Long COVID, also known as post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 is a condition where an individual may experience COVID symptoms for longer than 4 weeks. A significant amount of these individuals not only experience the lingering COVID symptoms from their initial acute infection, but they may also end up with completely new symptoms. It’s important to remember that these symptoms may be unique for each individual and that the list of symptoms in itself is ever-evolving.
Symptoms associated with long COVID include (but are not limited to): fatigue, GI complaints, skin conditions, shortness of breath, congestion, memory challenges, difficulty concentrating, brain fog, headaches, insomnia, anxiety, depression, persistent cough, smell/taste alterations, heart palpitations, night sweats, muscle pain, ringing in the ears, joint pain, chest pain, changes in menstruation, elevated blood pressure, numbness/tingling, pain, neurological issues, cardiovascular complications, liver issues, kidney complications and more.
There are a number of different mechanisms that have been proposed for the symptoms associated with Long COVID including: persistent inflammation, viral damage, organ dysfunction, immune dysregulation, re-activation of other viruses (such as epstein barr or cytomegalovirus), and more. Additional research is needed to further shed light on the underlying mechanisms at hand.
